Island Rab Info

Rab Activity

Geographical location

Situated between 44.41' and 44.51' north latitude, the happy Island of Rab sits in the middle of the Gulf of Kvarner, accompanied by dozens of other Croatian islands. Like the Croatian coast itself, this 22 kilometers long and 11 kilometers wide island stretches northwest - southeast and is separated from the mainland by the Velebit channel.

Weather on the island of Rab is pleasent as warm summers take turns with gentle winters, amounting to a special kind of Mediterranean climate. With around 2600 hours of sunshine a year (that is only 9 overcast days in the entire summer) Rab is a great location for a holiday.  Temperatures range between 8 and 17 C in April, all the way to 17-28 C in July and August, with average sea temperature of 25 C.

Rab has rich history with many historical figures. Settled by Illyrians in 350BC, Rab became ancient Roman municipality in the 1st century BC and developed into center of the eastern coast of Adriatic, called Felix Arba ( Arb is Illyric for dark, lush). Its glory days began between the second half of the XI. century all the way to XIII century, when it was governed by the Croatian rulers, as well as members of Venetian republic in a form of a free Adriatic comune. It was later sold to Venice in the 15th century and remained in their rule all the way to the 1798. when Napoleon came to these parts.

Many churches and town squares on the island of Rab have not changed their primary role as the centre of the cultural living since the Roman days. Every summer you can experience all kinds of happenings on the streets of Rab, from concerts presenting eminent Croatian and international musicians, to open art atteliers and street exhibitions, creating a special vibrant atmosphere.
If you can, we recommend seeing Rab Nautic Passion, a showcase of local shipbuilding, then Križi, traditional pilgrimage started after the two outbreaks of plague in the 15th century. Then there are knight tournaments during the Medieval Summer Festival Rabska Fjera and Eko Šetimana (roughly tranlates as Eko Week) where local growers and producers present their crops and homemade foods.

Sights of nature

Known as the island of sun, sand, sea and beauty, as well as one of the most verdant islands in the Adriatic, Rab is criss crossed by more than 100 kilometers of hiking trails and biking paths, allowing you to explore the beauty of the mediterranean landscape at your own leasurly pace.

The most beautiful part of this woody island must be the Kalifront peninsula, known for its carst relief as well as indented coast with many beautiful coves and bays hidden in the embrace of the pine forests, ideal for energetic hikes that can be enjoyed regardless of your age, as the highest peak of is only 94 meters above sea level. Rajska plaža (Paradise beach) located in Lopar, an endless sandy beach is so perfect that it got into the world top 10 beaches 2012 according to CNN.

Forest of Dundo, one of the rare preserved forests of evergreen oak ( or holm oak) which can grow older than a thousand years became a national botanical park in 1949. Another green wonder of the island is Komrčar park, planted and designed by a forester Pravdoje Belija in the 1883.

Geological sights

Rab is an island of great geological contrasts - rocky and barren on the northern side (due to Bura winds that can blow up to 200 km / h), yet covered in forests and very fertile on the western side. In the areas of Lopar and Fruga penisulas  wind and erosionhave  created canyons and other shapes in the sandy soil, as well as numerous sandy coves. If you care about geology and fossils, you should visit our Geopark, which is well marked on hiking trails called "Premužić path." after a well known forestry engineer and mountain afficionado.

There is a lot of traditions on Rab, but “Rabska fjera” brings in more than 10.000 tourists evey year. During those days (25-27. 07.) streets of Rab become a stage for a medieval festival, where artisans show their craft and produce, crossbowmen their skills and sharpshooting and everybody else just enjoys themselves.
Another great date comes around the last Sunday in April, when all citizens of Rab and Lopar celebrate Križi, an ancient pilgrimage custom started after a devastating plague outbreak in the 15. century, when it was thought that only God can save them from death. Pilgrims walk across the island all the way to the Cathedral of the Assumption in Rab, where they celebrate.
On the last day of the carnival, the Mardi Gras, people of Lopar celebrate a 150 years old ritual doning traditional masks (consisting of klobuk and vizera) and singing old folk songs, moving from one home to the other where they are greeted with food and drinks.
Other Lopar traditions and customs can often be seen during the performances of their folk culture and lore society “San Marino”, or at various ancient arts and crafts fairs held all over the island. If you get a chance try dancing the tanac or pojka, accompanied by mih, some kind of a local take on bagpipes.
